No Eye Has Seen

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
    and no mind has imagined
what God has prepared
    for those who love him.”
I Corinthians 2:9

In this set of verses Paul, the author of the books of Corinthians is referencing two scriptures from the book of Isaiah.

Isaiah 64:4 and Isaiah 65:17

“For since the world began,
    no ear has heard
and no eye has seen a God like you,
who works for those who wait for him!”

and

“Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth,
and no one will even think about the old ones anymore.”

I have had the privilege of traveling the country a few times and even now am preparing to begin doing so again.

I have seen some of the most amazing things man could imagine. And yet, here Paul says, no eye has yet seen those things which God prepares for us.

Boy, isn’t that something?

I think it is. BECAUSE I have seen so much that is utterly indescribable, this verse has a very significant impact on me.

In spite of the hardships I face and those days when evil seems to be beating me over the head non stop, I can still see. I still have my sight. I then can lay eyes on the beauty of what God has created.

If then I full understand what Paul is saying “I ain’t seen nothin’ yet”.

Wow.

Those things I have heard that have been so wonderful, the laughing of my small children as they played, the sound of the hummingbird flapping it’s wings so close to my head, even landing on my phone as I held it. The beauty of a single flute or violin played skillfully with ease. The eerie silence of the wind in the Grand Canyon below me at the early dawn hours before the sun arrives.

None of these compare.

The things I have seen, too many to list, apparently cannot compare.

Can you just imagine it?

I actually can’t.

Paul says we can’t.

In the days (like the past few for me) which have tested my abilities to remain calm, nice, resolute, this was a good reminder today that there is nothing I can see, hear, or lay my hands on which will compare to the things he has prepared for me.

Now…If I could just convince my mind to believe that.
