Blue Hour…

The blue hour is a wonderful time to do photography. This video takes place in Bryce Canyon National Park at the Amphitheater.

The Blue Hour is actually just about a 15 minute window on either side of sunup or sundown. After the sun goes down completely, or about 20 minutes before it crests the horizon in the morning, you are in what is called the blue hour. Depending on the time of the year, the light will be very blue, to magenta, to pink. It’s gorgeous…always (kinda’ like my wife).

I met with a lot of frustration on this particular adventure. Not the least of which was Ed, Classic Ed, hiking down into the canyon, near dark, only to get lost down there uncertain of how to return.

Fortunately, and I say VERY FORTUNATELY, he was able to call me. God was with us for sure as there is literally little to NO cell service there as a rule.

Through some discussion, helping him discern his whereabouts through some markers in the sky, he was able to find his way back up to the place where we were when he started.

A couple of things I learned at this.

Have a flashlight or blinking light available on you when you are hiking. Had I been thinking, I could have been blinking my headlight into the woods hoping he might be able to see it.

Perhaps use a whistle. This would help to isolate a direction for the lost hiker to find their way back.

I hope you enjoy this video. it’s pretty special.
