Headed North

After a full month in Holt, MI, we will finally, today, be on our way to the northern Michigan area. We are excited to begin to document the fall colors across the Upper Peninsula.

As I sit here at the table in the Micro Minnie, I am writing this blog while attached to our finally finished Starlink satellite internet.

The Starlink setup was one of the last pieces of our puzzle prior to heading out.

I had been waiting on a necessary part to complete the job, but after a 3 month wait, our time had run out. I had to come up with an alternative solution to get the set up finished.

I want the Starlink and our internet router to run off or 12v DC battery power and doing so requires a number of modifications both to the Starlink “Dishy” along with the TP Link router we use to run our internet.

It took some doing, but, when all connections were finally made, power was run, and the moment of truth came, I was very pleased to see our connection speeds were more than I could have hoped. I say pleased because if you know how Starlink works, you know it’s portable and requires a stand. Motors move the dish around finding Satellites. I bypassed all of this, cut the motors off, and mounted it permanently to the top of our Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108 DS.

It’s a little weird, how it felt, knowing that even when we are in the middle of the woods of the National Forests of the Michigan Upper Peninsula, we will still have internet connection and I will still be able to not only write on this blog, but will also be able to post videos almost immediately after recording.

It is, however, neat. It’s also liberating. Even if we do not have cell service we will still be able to use apps to make calls. I will still have access to our maps and all the systems we use for travling. Avenza maps, Gaia GPS maps, Google maps, IOverlander, Freecampsites.net, Freeroam, Recreation.gov to name a few. The list is extensive.

Gone are the days we have to scavenge for cell service, even if it’s one bar, to try and get a mapping coordinate.

At any rate, I hope you will be following along. There are sure to be a lot of neat opportunities for us to share all of the upcoming adventure with you.

Our route will be a big circle working from the bottom of the U.P. up through the Brockway mountain area and then back across the top of the U.P. I am still undecided on whether or not I will risk another drone strike by an eagle at the falls of Tahquamenon.

The photos I was able to gather before he/she took out my drone were amazing. I’d like to try that again. I have a spotter now with Joelle so perhaps it will work out.

Hope you’ll follow along with us on Youtube and through our various social media options. You can find links to them all at the top of the website.

Stay tuned….
