Nuclear Wasteland

If you have seen the movie, The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington you will understand fully the reference I make in our most recent video.

We find ourselves in Southern California. The place in which we are currently staying is an RV resort. Well, the term “resort” would be a stretch. I hail from Central Florida. So my standard or point of reference for a “resort” will be radically different, from say, the rest of the planet. I’d call this a throwback to the 1970’s RV Park more than I would say it’s a “resort”.

In fact, this “resort” according to a book the owners have given us, saw it’s best days in the 1970’s. Sadly, it seems to have stayed in that era; as have the other 2 “resorts” in the immediate vicinity of this property. For the life of me, I cannot see why anyone would ever choose to drive out here for anything. But that line of thinking is for another post on another day.

It’s smack dab in the middle of what has to be, in my vast travel experiences, one of the most desolate, depressing areas I have yet seen.

If you HAVE seen that particular movie, when I say it seems as if we have stepped into the screen to wander the same wildernesses Eli himself did, you will fully understand the meaning.

We will be here for another few weeks as we round out our 2 months stay here as a Work Camper.

Shooting B Roll in Slab City, California

We are being provided a full hook up site at the RV park as a work camper and a little income for any hours I put in beyond the 12 per week required to “pay” for the site.

We wanted to make an update video and this video is that update. A subscriber asked recently if we’d make a video in which we discuss how we prepare and get ready to head to our next boondocking location.

We put together in this video a comprehensive list of what we do and how we do it along with the steps we take in the planning of our next 14 day stay; all part of living on the road full time.

Boondocking or Dispersed Camping is camping, generally in an RV, without any hookups.

Hookup being defined as Electricity, Water, and Sewer. In many cases, also cable TV and even Internet.

When one Boondocks or Dispersed Camps, they are using their RV or “rig” to stay in what is often referred to as Off Grid.

This is a situation where the camper is fully dependent on the RV’s self contained systems. it’s electricity capacity, either through Solar or Generator (or a combination of both), it’s stored water in tanks, along with it’s waste water holding capacity; both the gray water (sinks and showers) and the black water (sewer water).

In the video we discuss how we use various apps to find a new camp in which to set up and stay. We use the apps Campendium, I Overlander, RV Parky as well as Gaia GPS and Avenza maps.

We also outline how we handle our food planning along with our tank dumping, fuel refills and propane refills.

Ultimately, we believe that this video helps to define various terms related to off grid living as well as providing helpful tips and tricks we use to plan ahead in order to make the next stop enjoyable, stress free, and peaceful.

I hope you find it helpful and until the next one…
