A Fall Color Tour Across the Midwest

In early September, I thought it’d be a great time to tour the Midwest for the purposes of doing some fall color photography.

I had heard that the Michigan Upper Peninsula was an unbelievable experience as it relates to fall leaves and the colors.

Funny. I lived in Michigan for a large portion of my life yet I had never actually taken the time to head up north to gather fall color photography.

My trip started with an 1800 or so mile drive to Ironwood Michigan. From there, after an overnight, I headed all the way up through the Keweenaw Peninsula, ultimately making my way to Brockway Mountain near Copper Harbor.

After this, I headed over to see my uncle on his huge 300 plus acres for a night of coffee, conversation, and fellowship.

I then made my way to the Newberry area to do more video and photography.

It was here that a lot changed for this trip. A LOT.

While doing some last minute photography, an Eagle actually downed my Mavic Air 2s drone and put it in the river beneath the falls. Gone were the first three days of stunning footages from the far western regions of the Michigan U.P.

Thankfully, I took with me the DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2 originally purchased to begin doing 3d Mapping and photography.

I doubled back, adding another 600 plus miles to my trip hoping to get back to the areas from which I had come only to find that in only 3 short days, the leaves and color from these areas had expired and dropped off the trees. Total loss.

At any rate, I made my way across the lower peninsula, spent a few nights in Lansing with family and then made my way to the Appalachians.

I’ll be headed there again next season, but not before Joelle and I spend 5 months or so traveling the west and the north starting in March of next year. It’s going to be a very interesting spring for Rob and Joelle. I hope you’ll consider following along.
